Thyroid hormones control how your body uses energy. They affect almost every organ in your body. When your thyroid doesn’t make enough of these hormones, parts of your body slow down.  

Hypothyroidism is caused by a deficiency in thyroid hormone and can lead to many unpleasant symptoms that range from annoying to concerning. Common symptoms of hypothyroid include:

• weight gain
• trouble tolerating cold
• joint and muscle pain

• heavy or irregular menstrual periods or fertility problems

Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed with a simple history and physical exam along with a blood draw to check your thyroid hormones. If indicated, a medication to help increase your thyroid hormone will be prescribed. You can expect to see symptom improvement within a couple weeks.
